What is a Management Referral?

Management Referral assessments are a proactive approach aimed at gaining a comprehensive understanding of an individual’s current health status and determining their ability to continue working safely or return to work. These assessments are designed to assist employers and employees in implementing the necessary support measures to ensure the employee’s safety and fitness during their time at work or when returning.

What businesses would benefit from a Management Referral service?

Our case management referral service is suitable for businesses of any size and is suitable for people who work in all kinds of industries and sectors. This is because we tailor our services to suit the specific needs of an organisation.

Reasons to refer an employee

  • If an employee has an illness or medical condition which is affecting their ability to work
  • If an employee has suffered a work-related injury or illness, and requires a return to work assessment
  • If an employee is experiencing stress at work
  • If any employee is suffering from a mental health issue whilst at work
  • If an employee has a disability that requires workplace accommodations
  • If an employee has been off work for a prolonged period of time
  • If an employee has high levels of absenteeism
  • If an employee is experiencing ergonomic issues or discomfort whilst working
  • If an employee is exposed to certain hazards that are affecting their ability to work
  • If there are general concerns about an employee’s health and wellbeing

Deciding on whether an employee needs an occupational health referral?

Employers have a duty of care to their employees. No matter if the illness or condition wasn’t caused by being at work. They have a duty of care to protect the well-being of their employees. If it becomes apparent that an employee’s health is affecting their performance and ability to perform at work then an employee referral could be appropriate.

Management referrals for mental health concerns

A management referral assessment is tailored specifically to the needs of the individual. However, for a person who is struggling with their mental health, a referral can be hugely beneficial. Management referrals provide the employee with a confidential assessment by a qualified occupational health professional.

During the assessment, underlying issues or causes of the issues could be highlighted, and how these are affecting their ability to perform their job effectively. The assessment can also provide guidance on any necessary workplace adjustments or accommodations that may be required to help the employee perform to the best of their ability.

What does a management referral include?

A management referral first involves a consultation with one of our occupational healthcare professionals. This may be face-to-face or via telephone or video. This may also be with an Occupational Heath Advisor, Occupational Health Physician or Occupational Therapist. The assessor will work to identify specific health issues which are affecting the individual.

Once the issue(s) has been identified, the assessor will work with the employee to decide on possible adjustments that may help the employee at work or help the employee to return to work. This could involve providing employees with access to occupational health services such as counselling or other forms of therapy. Or it could involve making adjustments to the working environment or providing employees with additional training or support. The assessment findings and recommendations for supporting the employee will be compiled into a comprehensive report, which will be shared with both the employee and their referring manager.

Supported service

Throughout the process, our occupational health professionals maintain close collaboration with your HR team and line managers. This ensures the effective and efficient implementation of the plan. If additional support is needed at any point, our assessors are available to arrange further assessments and provide additional guidance and recommendations on the most suitable ways to assist the employee.
