Mental health plays a vital role in how employees perform and engage at work. With rising levels of stress, anxiety, and depression reported across the UK workforce, it’s more important than ever for employers to recognise the signs of declining mental health and put meaningful support in place.
Some common signs that an employee may be struggling with their mental health include:
- Noticeable changes in mood or behaviour
- Increased irritability or emotional outbursts
- Withdrawal from colleagues or workplace activities
- Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
- A drop in productivity or quality of work
- Increased sickness absence or lateness
Recognising these early warning signs and taking action can help prevent more serious issues from developing. Through this, you are supporting both employee wellbeing and organisational resilience.
Common Mental Health Conditions in the Workplace
Mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and stress-related disorders can have a significant impact on an individual’s ability to function at work. These conditions may affect motivation, focus, time management, communication, and overall confidence. Without appropriate support, employees may become overwhelmed, resulting in long-term absence, burnout, or even resignation.
Resilience and Wellbeing Assessments
At Acorn, we offer Resilience and Wellbeing Assessments through our management referral process to support employees dealing with more complex or ongoing mental health challenges. These appointments are longer than standard assessments, giving the clinician additional time to build trust and fully understand the employee’s needs.
The assessment results in a detailed report for the employer, which includes fitness for work advice, recommendations for reasonable adjustments, and suggestions for further support. Where helpful, the clinician may also provide the employee with self-help resources or signposting to relevant services. This service is particularly useful for cases involving long-term mental health concerns or when a more in-depth exploration is required.
Listening Service
We also offer a Listening Service, designed as a safe, confidential space where employees can speak openly with a clinician about any difficulties they’re experiencing. No report is written, and there’s no pressure – just time to talk and be heard. This service is ideal for employees who may not need formal intervention but would benefit from a professional ear and a supportive conversation.
Supporting mental health in the workplace strengthens teams, boosts productivity, and creates a happier, healthier workforce. If you’d like to find out more about our mental health support services, please get in touch:
