Every June, Men’s Health Week shines a light on the physical and mental health challenges faced by men – challenges that too often go unspoken and unaddressed. This dedicated week aims to raise awareness, encourage conversation, and promote early intervention for issues that impact men at home, at work, and in society as a whole.
At Acorn Occupational Health, we’re proud to support Men’s Health Week by not only raising awareness but by offering real, practical support that helps men feel better, move better, and thrive in their working lives.
Why Is Men’s Health Week Important?
The statistics tell a worrying story:
- Men are less likely to seek help for both physical and mental health problems.
- Suicide remains the leading cause of death for men under 50 in the UK.
- Men are more likely to suffer in silence with issues like stress, depression, or chronic pain.
- Manual work and desk-based roles alike can take a significant toll on musculoskeletal health and general wellbeing.
Men’s Health Week isn’t just about highlighting these facts – it’s about changing them. It encourages men to check in with themselves and others, to speak up, and to take steps toward better health.
What Are Some of the Key Issues?
Following on from our social media posts earlier this week, we wanted to expand on a few areas where men may experience particular health challenges:
- Mental Health & Emotional Wellbeing
Workplace pressure, stigma around vulnerability, and societal expectations can all make it difficult for men to acknowledge mental health struggles. Many keep pushing through stress, anxiety, or depression until they reach crisis point.
- Musculoskeletal Pain & Physical Strain
Whether it’s the repetitive strain of a desk job or the physical demands of manual work, men often overlook early signs of discomfort. Without proper intervention, this can lead to long-term injuries or chronic pain.
- Barriers to Seeking Help
Many men don’t feel comfortable asking for support, especially in professional settings. There’s still a perception that seeking help may be seen as weakness, something Men’s Health Week works hard to dismantle.
How Acorn Can Help Support Men’s Health at Work
Workplaces play a vital role in supporting men’s health and that’s where we come in. At Acorn Occupational Health, we offer a range of services designed to identify risk, provide early support, and promote a culture of wellbeing for all employees, including men who may be struggling quietly.
We help prevent and address physical discomfort through tailored DSE, Workstation Assessments and more. These assessments support musculoskeletal health and reduce the risk of injury, particularly in male-dominated or sedentary roles.
Counselling Services
We offer counselling sessions with qualified counsellors, providing a safe, confidential space for men to speak freely about what they’re experiencing. Sometimes, just being heard is the first step to real change.
Through our Occupational Health Advisor and Occupational Health Physician assessments, we support men experiencing health-related difficulties in the workplace. Whether it’s stress, injury, or long-term illness, our reports help employers understand how to offer reasonable adjustments and tailored support.
Workplace Education
We also deliver workshops and support around key mental health issues, such as our Stress Awareness Training, helping your teams understand, spot signs early, and respond appropriately.
