‘Know Your Numbers’ Week- Blood Pressure UK
‘Know Your Numbers’ week is a campaign run by Blood Pressure UK.
At Acorn Occupational Health, we feel it’s a brilliantly effective campaign. It enables employers and employees throughout the UK to gain a better understanding and appreciate the importance of being aware of their blood pressure. Part of this campaign is the encouragement to have a blood pressure check-up. This means you can familiarise yourself with the good and bad. It also will highlight steps you can take to improve your blood pressure and avoid issues, overall improving your long-term health.
Did you know that over 6 million people in the UK have high blood pressure, and don’t even know it?
When your heart beats, it pumps blood around your body, transporting oxygen to your organs and other areas of the body that need it. As the blood moves, it pushes against the sides of the blood vessels. The strength of this pushing is your blood pressure. If your blood pressure is too high, it puts extra strain on your heart and blood vessels. This is called high blood pressure, or hypertension. Over time it can lead to a number of health problems including heart attacks, stroke, kidney disease, and some forms of dementia.
