An Occupational Health referral is a key step in supporting an employee’s health and well-being in the workplace. At Acorn Occupational Health, our Management Referrals provide a detailed evaluation of an individual’s physical and mental health. This determines their ability to continue working safely or return to work after an absence.

Here’s what to expect:

What Is an Occupational Health Assessment?

The assessment is conducted by one of our experienced Occupational Health Advisors (OHAs), Occupational Therapists (OTs) or Occupational Health Physicians (OHPs). They consider the information provided in the referral, medical reports, and details discussed during the appointment. The aim is to deliver an impartial evaluation along with tailored recommendations that support the employee and help them manage their health in relation to work.

For example, if an employee has been absent for some time, we might recommend a phased return to work with shorter hours or reduced tasks. We may also suggest counselling or other interventions if needed.

What Happens During an Occupational Health Assessment?

During the assessment, the employee has a confidential conversation with the practitioner. This is an opportunity to:

  • Discuss their current health and any treatments they are receiving
  • Express any concerns they have about returning to work or their ability to perform their role
  • Explore any workplace adjustments that might make their return easier

This discussion helps the practitioner gain a full understanding of the employee’s situation, ensuring the recommendations are practical and supportive.

How Is the Assessment Report Used?

The report generated from the assessment will directly address the questions posed by the employer in the referral and provide clear, actionable advice. The employee’s consent is always obtained before sharing the report with the employer, ensuring privacy and trust are maintained throughout the process.

The recommendations could include adjustments such as reduced working hours, ergonomic equipment, or lighter workloads. If ongoing support is needed, future assessments may be scheduled to monitor progress and ensure the employee is ready to return to work.

What to Expect as an Employee

For employees, an occupational health referral might feel unfamiliar or even stressful. At Acorn Occupational Health, we aim to make the process as comfortable as possible. Our assessments are a safe space to talk openly about your health, free from judgement. The purpose of the assessment is to support your well-being and help make your transition back to work smooth and manageable.

What Can Employers Expect?

Employers can expect clear, practical solutions tailored to the employee’s health needs. This allows both employer and employee to collaborate on creating a supportive return-to-work plan, which may include modifications to their role or work environment. The assessment ensures that the employee’s health needs are met while balancing the operational needs of the business.
