At Acorn Occupational Health, we’re pleased to announce the return of our TB Clinic Days, offering Mantoux testing and BCG vaccinations, for a limited time this June. These services are essential tools in the prevention and control of tuberculosis (TB), particularly for those working in higher-risk professions or environments.

What Is Tuberculosis (TB)?

Mycobacterium tuberculosis causes the bacterial infection known as tuberculosis. It most commonly affects the lungs, but it can impact other parts of the body such as the kidneys, spine, or brain. TB spreads through airborne droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes – making enclosed environments a particular risk for transmission.

TB in the Workplace

While TB is relatively rare in the UK compared to global rates, certain sectors are more vulnerable, including:

  • Healthcare professionals
  • Care home staff
  • Laboratory and pathology workers
  • Those working closely with at-risk populations

In these environments, early detection and vaccination play a vital role in protecting staff and preventing outbreaks. Occupational health services can help employers stay proactive in their duty of care.

What Is the Mantoux Test?

The Mantoux test is a screening tool used to identify whether someone has been exposed to TB bacteria. It involves a small injection just under the skin on the forearm. After 48–72 hours, a trained clinician examines the injection site to determine the result.

  • A positive result may indicate latent or active TB infection.
  • A negative result suggests no previous exposure.

This test helps identify individuals who may benefit from further investigation or a BCG vaccine.

The BCG Vaccine: Your Best Defence Against TB

The BCG (Bacillus Calmette–Guérin) vaccine is the only licensed vaccine for TB. It doesn’t prevent all types of TB, but it is highly effective against severe and potentially life-threatening forms, such as TB meningitis in children and disseminated TB.

BCG is recommended for individuals at higher occupational or environmental risk, including staff working in healthcare settings where they may be exposed to untreated TB.
